Toxic Gases

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
  • Source: Cargo tanks, sewage, drilling
  • Danger: 10 ppm - Eye irritation
  • 100 ppm - Loss of smell (warning gone!)
  • 1000 ppm - Instant death
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
  • Source: Incomplete combustion, engines
  • Danger: Colorless, odorless
  • 35 ppm - 8-hour exposure limit
  • 1200 ppm - Death in 3 minutes
Ammonia (NH3)
  • Source: Refrigeration systems
  • 25 ppm - 8-hour exposure limit
  • 300 ppm - Immediately dangerous
